| Articles of Interest Learn the Art of Peruvian Cuisine
Peruvian cuisine is widely regarded as the most delicious and varied in the South American region. In the last few years its profile has risen thanks to international recognition of the unique flavours, secrets and tastes of Peru’s typical dishes.
Thanks to Peru´s unique biodiversity, traditional dishes draw on a wide variety of fresh ingredients, from the constant supply of fresh fish, to the incredibly tasty fruits and vegetables that grow year round, to the exotic flavours of Peru’s many home-grown spices.
But it is more than simply the ingredients that contributes to the richness of Peruvian cuisine. A variety of influences have shaped the outcome, from pre-Inca times onwards. The diversity of our people, from the coast, the jungle, the Andes and the settlers from the colonial times (Spanish, Italians, Japanese, Chinese, Africans, French and more) has been a significant contributor to the uniqueness of the Peruvian dining experience.
Interested in learning more about Peru’s wonderful cuisine? Rupa Wasi Ecolodge offers structured 2, 3 and 4 day lessons as well as tailor-made itineraries to fit your travel arrangements.
The four Rupa Wasi partners have a strong devotion and love for good cuisine. For 7 years they have offered their tasty food to guests. Sessions are aimed at travelers who want an authentic cultural experience. They offer the opportunity to participate in a real kitchen environment, with real cooks providing food to real customers.
Classes are initially based on a theoretical explanation of the menu: you will learn not only recipes, but the entire procedure, from choosing the right ingredients in the market, to the various methods of portioning, packaging and storing local products. A participative demonstration takes place, before offering the final product. Classes are offered in the morning or evening, depending on your schedule.
The folks at Rupa Wasi want you to take home great memories as well as cooking skills you’ll never lose.
Each course includes:
Apron and hat
A book with all their personal recipes and history of ten main ingredients
A certificate
A less formal Alternative: El Huacatay Cooking Classes
Hidden behind an unsuspecting door on the streets of Urubamba is a classy, sophisticated restaurant named El Huacatay. You won’t find any ‘platos típicos’ here, but rather a creative menu with enough intriguing options to leave you undecided. Chef (and owner) Pio is an extremely talented young chef who is making a name for himself throughout the country. He offers informal cooking lessons as well (he speaks great English). If you are interested you can email him at elhuacatay@yahoo.es.
