Description
Libertador Lodge is located in the indigenous village of Yanahuara, 12 km from the town of Urubamba. It is a relative newcomer in the valley, having opened in late 2004, and is definitely one of the most beautiful places to stay in the Sacred Valley. Affiliated with the Peruvian chain Hoteles Libertador, this Lodge is surrounded by amazing landscapes, offering 3.5 hectares of splendid gardens, fruit trees, and streams that draw from the lakes beneath the snow capped peaks that are easily visible from every point in the hotel.
The main lounge offers an indoor sitting area with floor-to-ceiling glass windows from where you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view while reading a book from the library or playing a board game. Free internet access on two computer terminals is available at the lobby bar ‘Chupari’. Keep in mind that it is satellite internet, so it won’t work as fast as a regular connection, but faster than in any other place in Yanahuara.
A buffet breakfast (included) is served on the dining terrace, with the entire Sacred Valley as a magnificent backdrop.
A Spa is currently being built in the premises and should be ready by the end of 2007.
Transport from Cusco and throughout the Sacred Valley is available in the hotel’s private mini vans (additional cost). You can arrange your pick up from the airport in advance (the fare is $50). They can also arrange transportation from Yanahuara to Urubamba or Ollantaytambo’s station.
Insider Tips
Double rooms on the second floor of each building have a little private balcony from which you can enjoy the breathtaking scenery. Book room 303 if possible!
Benefits
Most of the staff speaks English and some even speak French and Italian. They are very knowledgeable and willing to attend your needs and organize alternative activities, like horseback riding, mountain bike, trek to the lakes, etc.
Although they don’t have a big gift shop, they do have a permanent exhibit of ceramics made by a local artisan. These ceramics show unique, beautiful designs not found anywhere else, at a very reasonable price.
Drawbacks
Yanahuara is a quiet community and doesn’t offer much selection for restaurants and entertainment, except for the restaurant and bar in the hotel. You’d be somewhat stuck here, but you can always have the hotel arrange a taxi to take you to Urubamba for 10 soles (around $3).
Rooms
There are 13 adobe buildings throughout the property, all with access to secluded gardens where one can sit and just enjoy some time outdoors. Each building holds one twin room with a little porch on the first floor and a double room with an intimate, cozy balcony on the second floor. Decorated with a fusion of colonial style and Andean designs, all rooms are spacious, bright and well-equipped with a TV set, a DVD player, heating, fresh flowers, a minibar, a safe-deposit box and comfortable armchairs. You can borrow DVDs at the front desk and watch cable TV at their Chupari Lobby Bar, (cable not available in the rooms).
The bathrooms are ample, immaculately clean and have excellent water pressure all day long. They also offer the expected amenities: bathrobes, shampoo, soap, a hair dryer and a nice bathtub.
Food
The Lodge’s restaurant, Patacancha, offers a combination of regional cuisine and international dishes. Buffet breakfast starts at 5.30am and is included in the room rates. It is served on the dining terrace, with the valley as a wonderful backdrop! They also offer Pachamancas with five varieties of meat, all the local tubers, wine, and Peru’s famous Pisco Sour. This Peruvian typical dish is prepared upon request (US$30 per person).
Children
Children have more than three hectares to discover local wildlife such as parrots and wild geese! Having a double and a twin room in the same units is perfect for families.
Rates $132 doubles / twin; includes buffet breakfast and taxes
