Description
Claudia Goitia de Rey is your gracious host at this outstanding property in Urubamba. Kuychi Rumi is almost like a small neighborhood, consisting of 6 guest houses and the main house where Claudia lives. The property is landscaped with the colourful Urubamba mountain range in the background (hence the name, which means Rainbow Stone). Roam through the ‘neighborhood’ and you are sure to come across her two dogs (gigantic but friendly) or a couple of goats.
Throughout the property you will find all kinds of interesting artwork and statues from Victor Delfin, a well-known artist from Lima, as well as beautiful gardens that attract hummingbirds during the day. Statues are interspersed amongst the crops that grow in various patches, including corn, artichoke, and lettuce. The ‘Octagonal’ building at the front of the property is used for spiritual gatherings. Further along you will find an outdoor facility for Parilla and Pachamanca, served to large groups upon request.
Insider Tips
- Claudia is very connected in the hospitality industry in Urubamba and is a great source of information on the lesser-known aspects of the Sacred Valley
- House #7 is the most secluded at the back of the property and has a bathtub!
- When there is a full moon a Fogata ceremony is organized with a shaman and crystals. This takes place in the crystal circle on the property.
- Transportation to / from the airport can be arranged for US$25
Benefits
- An all-around great option for your stay in the Sacred Valley
- Perfect for long-term stays because you can set up ‘house’ here
- On a clear night you have a perfect venue for star gazing
- Train station is only 5 minutes away (for trains from Ollantaytambo and Cusco)
- Staff speaks English and is extremely helpful in planning your activities in the area
Drawbacks
- No restaurants nearby so if you aren’t prepared to cook your own meals you’ll be trekking into town at night. This is not a huge hassle and Claudia will happily arrange a taxi to drop you off and pick you up after your meal.
Rooms
Each guest house is structurally the same, designed by Claudia’s husband. The difference lies in the interior design touches. Each house has two bedrooms – a master bedroom with ensuite bath on the second level and a second bedroom with shared bathroom on the first level. Bedrooms have very plain décor with big comforters to keep you warm at night. A small balcony extends from the master bedroom where you can take in the views from above. Rooms also have space heaters for extra chilly evenings. Bathrooms are not deluxe but are more than adequate with hot running water in the showers (House #7 has a bathtub). Towels and soap are provided.
The houses also have a fully equipped kitchen (stove, fridge, coffee maker, even a sandwich maker!) along with place settings and cutlery, and any other amenities you might need to cook a full meal. Beside the kitchen is a nice dining area that typically is situated in front of the deck providing plenty of sunlight. Glass paned doors open onto a deck where you can sit out and enjoy the day.
One of the nicest features of the houses is the sunken living room that is adjacent to the dining room. Comfortably cushioned couches / benches wrap around the room and face the fireplace. Be sure to check out the fireplace in House #2 – it takes on a life of its own when it is lit! The coffee table in the centre rounds out this room and provides a warm and cozy atmosphere to curl up with a book or play games.
Food
Breakfast can be prepared for you at an extra charge or, if you’d like, you can get a ‘starter kit’ with fruit, granola, yogurt, cheese, ham, coffee, etc for US$25 all the basics to make breakfast for a few days. They are also happy to pick up more substantial fare from the market if you plan to cook meals ‘at home’.
Children
This is an excellent option for people traveling with children due to the size of the houses and the kitchen set up.
Rates rates per houseUS$100 (1-2 persons) US$140 (3 persons) US$160 (4 persons) $20 additional bed
