Description
The most upscale option in Ollantaytambo, Hotel Pakaritampu is a sprawling property owned by a former volleyball Olympian, Gaby Pιrez del Solar (from the volleyball team). From the outside the hotel looks like a wealthy estate tucked in amidst the mountains, with plenty of space to roam. Three separate buildings house 30 rooms. The restaurant is adjacent to the reception and you will find a comfortable lounge within the same building with a beautiful fireplace that makes a great sitting room, and a welcoming bar upstairs (happy hour is between 5:30 and 7:30). There is also a business center with Internet and fax.
The back yard is beautifully landscaped and in the rear you will find a terrace with picnic tables where groups can enjoy a pachamanca (a meal of various marinated meats and vegetables cooked underground on hot stones for a long period of time). An Inca ditch runs though the yard providing a soothing sound of flowing water to put you to sleep at night.
Insider Tips
Be sure to get a room in the new building (#20 30) and specify one with a view. Rooms on the second floor have the best views.
Benefits
- Beautiful setting
- English speaking staff
- Lovely restaurant on the premise
- Located 2 minutes from the train station
Drawbacks
- Rooms are not as nice as the exterior would suggest
- Popular with tour groups due to the number of rooms
Rooms
Despite the glamorous interior, the rooms are a bit disappointing. This is not to say that they are not nice, but rather that they are somewhat basic in style. However, they do have nice touches such as slippers and umbrellas for guests. Some rooms have views of the ruins and Tunapa (the face of the god Viracocha that is carved into the mountain). Bathrooms are nice and relatively spacious. They come equipped with shampoo and hairdryers. The showers are OK but somewhat lacking in water pressure. Rooms also have large armoires where you can hang clothing as well as a safe.
Food
The onsite restaurant is relatively upscale with a widely varied menu serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Menu includes fish (S 28 39), meat (S 35 46) and Pasta (S 14 20). A breakfast buffet is included in the price of the room.
Rates Doubles US$110; includes breakfast and taxes
