Description
As the name would suggest, this hotel, part of the San Agustin chain, has been transformed from a Franciscan monastery into a lovely hotel. Originally built in 1613, the monastery today is only a small part of the hotel, with several additions incorporated throughout the property. Out back, an old chapel provides ambiance and views in keeping with the spirit of the hotel’s history.
Cobblestoned walkways lead you through the building which is made of beautiful adobe and brick. 10 of the 30 rooms are located in the original monastery around a central courtyard where a lounge / bar area occupies the length of one side. Here you will find a small satellite TV as well as a business center with Internet access. The remaining walls of the courtyard are adorned with beautiful works of art.
While the original part of the hotel has a charming, rustic feel, the newer addition boasts wide-open gardens where you can relax. Here you will find a modern restaurant with plenty of windows to enjoy the view.
Insider Tips
Climb up the chapel’s bell tower for some outstanding views of the valley.
Benefits

- English speaking staff
Drawbacks
- Rooms are fairly ordinary and lacking the charm of the exterior
Rooms
10 rooms are located in the older part of the hotel, which used to be the monastery. Each room has two levels with a loft set-up. Beds are on the second level and below is an open seating area and the bathroom. These rooms are numbered in the 100’s.
The newer rooms are numbered 200 and up. They are bungalow-style, with relatively minimal décor, save for the plaid bedspreads. They are equipped with phones, individual heaters, safes and closet space.
The bathrooms are quite nice with Spanish-style stone showers, reasonable space and decent water pressure. Amenities include shampoo, soap and hairdryers.
Suites are not much larger than the standard rooms with a tiny living room (not really a separate room) and a queen-sized bed. These rooms have exposed brick and open-concept showers. TV’s can be included at an extra charge (local channels only).
Food
There is a lovely restaurant on the premise that serves local specialties as well as international food for lunch and dinner. Room service is available. A buffet breakfast is included in the rate.
Rates Single: US$70; Doubles: US$80; Suites: US$90; includes breakfast and taxes
