Once a lunch stop on the way to Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley has become a destination unto itself as travelers seeking peace and relaxation have begun basing themselves here. A number of charming options catering to OTR travelers have sprung up in recent years and there are more to come.

We recommend using the Sacred Valley as your base for visiting the area. Those who plan to visit Machu Picchu may want to stay in Aguas Calientes the night before to beat the crowds and see the sunrise, however there are very few recommendable options in town. If price is not a concern try the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge located right at Machu Picchu. For OTR Travelers we have listed some other alternatives below. It is still possible to get to Machu Pichu on the early Machu Pichu Train before the major tour groups arrive if you stay in the Sacred Valley. Keep in mind that the Sacred Valley welcomes all beings, so you are likely to encounter little critters in even the best hotels. Hot water and electricity are often problems out here, so expect shortages of both from time to time.

I want to stay at the closest thing I can find to a hostel without staying in a group dorm.
