Description
Jack’s Café is certainly one of the most popular places to grab a good meal, hang out with friends and meet new people. The café was established in 1999 by Jane Berthelsen, a friendly Australian who came to Peru as a tourist, stayed to work with an NGO helping abandoned single mothers, and then decided to make her home in Cusco and open Jack’s Café, which she named after her young son.
Jack’s is nicely decorated with drawings and paintings that match their light brown walls, and an antique coffee machine that is a source of envy for every other restaurant in Cusco! Small wooden tables accommodate 2, 4 or 6 people and a counter bar is available for you to park while you wait for a table, with magazines and English books to keep you entertained. Yes, this place is usually very crowded, with foreigners lining up to enjoy Jack’s all day English breakfast.
Jack’s menu offers a wide variety of dishes (several options for vegetarians, too), so you can keep going back for more.
Insider Tips
Don’t miss El Gordo (17 soles) –potatoes, sausages, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, eggs and toast in an oversized dish, orange juice and a hot beverage – definitely try their fantastic cappuccino! Vegetarians can replace sausages with avocado and grilled cheese. If the altitude’s got your appetite, ask for El Flaco –toasts, jams and eggs of your choice - for 11.5 soles. Jack’s fluffy pancakes are wonderful… and huge, so you may want to consider sharing this honey-buttered exquisiteness with someone.
Sandwiches are beautiful and creative…we recommend the veggie burger (17 soles) and all their toasties (ham, cheese and tomato or chicken, avocado and cheese- between 10 and 14 soles). We also recommend main dishes such as the green curry with chicken for 20 soles (spicy!), tex-mex beans in tortilla wraps (9 soles) and the beef stir fry, served with veggies and rice, for 19 soles. If you’re in the mood, consider the beautiful selection of natural juices and smoothies (5-6 soles).
