Description
Located at the quiet end of Saphi street since 1999, Los Andenes de Saphi (‘saphi’ means ‘root’ in Quechua) is one of the coziest, most pleasant places to stay in Cusco. Only four blocks away from the main square, at the base of Sacsayhuaman, this hotel stands on original Inca terraces and will give you the feeling of being in a chambre d'hôtes in Europe, with its typical rustic wooden structure. On the first floor you will find the lobby with a nice library (and a decent variety of English books) and a fireplace, all decorated with brick and soft pastel colours that create a relaxed atmosphere. The staff here are very helpful, speak English and have plenty of information on Cusco and its whereabouts. Transportation from the airport can be arranged in advance for $5 and there is a safety-deposit box at the front desk. There is a small shop on the premises were you can buy film, postcards, water, guide books and other souvenirs. Laundry and fax services are available upon request and a storage place is free for you to use.
Insider Tips
Saphi street gets wider when you reach Los Andenes de Saphi, so there are plenty of safe parking places.
Benefits
Since the hotel was built respecting the Andean terraces, there are three flower-filled terraces with decks for sunbathing.
Drawbacks
Though they have wireless internet access, they charge 5 soles an hour for the service, which is a bit pricey for Cusco.
Rooms
Los Andenes de Saphi has 14 rooms and a capacity for 40 guests. In addition to their double and triple rooms, they also have one family room, with two twin beds on the first level and another bed on the mezzanine. Their rooms, which are painted in earth tones and decorated in a modern Andean style, aren’t very big, but are comfortable and well lit. Despite the fact that the rooms stay warm thanks to their wooden build, each one has an electric heater if necessary. Though all rooms have a telephone, only nine of them have cable TVs, so be sure to ask in advance if this is a requirement. All rooms have windows with views.
Although their bathrooms are a bit small, they are very clean and brand new, with ceramic walls in soft colours. They are equipped with shampoo, soap and towels. The water pressure is always good and hot water is available all the time.
Food
The dining area is located on the first floor, right next to the main entrance and opposite the reception desk. The glass ceiling provides a warm, bright environment were you can try soups, sandwiches or their typical corn cake. A buffet breakfast is included in the rate and it is served from 5.30 am to 10am.
Children
The hotel has a room that is perfect for families, with two levels and twin beds in addition to the regular setup.
Rates Single US$35; Double or twin US$40.50; Family room US$55.00; includes breakfast and taxes.
