Casona Real

Peru > Cusco > Hotels > Casona Real

Description
This 300 year-old colonial Monastery that used to dominate Procuradores Street, has housed Casona Real for the past 8 years. The original property was divided among priests, one of whom was the Alzamora Bishop, who passed his share onto his heirs, who in turn sold it to a family from Lima. Approaching the building from Procuradores Street (a.k.a Gringo Alley), it is difficult to imagine what lies behind the old, well maintained, wooden door. Pass through it and you will find a spacious bright patio, decorated mostly in colonial style, with plenty of plants and flowers providing a relaxed atmosphere, and a dining room with comfortable tables, chairs and sofas in case you want to take advantage of the hotel’s book exchange.

The hotel offers free wireless internet access on the first floor and two computer terminals at the front desk, together with a fax machine. There is also a safety-deposit box in this area and a free storage room.

Insider Tips
- Ask for a room on the second floor, as the ones on the first floor are a bit dark.
- At the moment they are building 2 family rooms with 4 beds each and plan to install a jacuzzi in room 202. For now the biggest and nicest room is 203 – a double room with a balcony opening to the cosmopolitan, and always busy, Procuradores Street.

Benefits
Well located close to everything: restaurants, churches, cathedral, banks, etc.

Drawbacks
It is somewhat unpleasant to walk along Procuradores Street at night. It is not unsafe, but the nightlife in Cusco makes it a bit loud. However, once you are in the hotel, you won’t be bothered, since the door closes at 10pm and little noise can be heard then. You’ll need to ring a bell to get in.

Rooms
As is very commonly found in Cusco, this colonial house has a covered patio with a stone fountain in the centre (called ‘solar’ in Spanish) and the rooms have been built around this patio, in this case over two floors. The rooms are spacious, well-ventilated thanks to high ceilings, painted in off white with little colour appliqués on the walls. They may be a little chilly at night, but nothing the electric heater and a couple of extra blankets can’t solve. The colourful bed covers add a touch of vibrancy to the rooms. All rooms have telephones and cable TV. Rooms on the second floor are brighter.

The bathrooms are fairly basic, no tubs - only showers, but with good water pressure and hot water all day. They do not have hair dryers, but you can borrow one at the front desk. They do come equipped with soap and towels.

Food
The dining area doubles as the lounge, and is located in the covered patio. The menu is limited, serving a continental breakfast, an American breakfast and simple sandwiches (ham, cheese, avocado, etc.). You can always order a delivery through the front desk. Continental breakfast (juice, bread, butter, jam and hot coffee or tea) is served from 5am to 10am. Procuradores Street offers several fast-food options, such as pizza, kebabs, tacos, etc.

Rates
Single US$40; Double or Twin US$65; Additional bed US$20
