About Rio Dulce
At the neck of Lago de Izabal, 20-some km from the mouth of the river where it opens up to the Caribbean, lies Rio Dulce (official name of the town is Fronteras). It is a quiet, cottage-like atmosphere surrounded by tropical forest. A nice getaway for travelers to relax and reconnect with themselves. Rio Dulce is also a resting point for sailors who have traveled through the Caribbean and are looking for a friendly place to dock their boats for a little while. Luxury here is hard to come by with many of the options being rustic and somewhat run down. However, over the years Rio Dulce has built itself up as a traveler’s outpost and today offers several activities and highlights to fill the days if chilling by the water with a book is not your thing.
Best Time to go
The weather in the area is humid throughout the year and rain is common. The most popular time to go is the 'dry season’, which runs from November through May. During this time there may be some rainfall, but it is generally only a short spurt during the late afternoon or throughout the night. During the rainy season it is possible to get steady rains for several days in a row. Hurricane season generally runs from mid-June to late October although most of the hurricanes occur in the Eastern Caribbean and, with some exceptions, have little effect on Guatemala.
