Hacienda Tijax

Guatemala > Rio Dulce > Hotels > Hacienda Tijax

Description
This lovely fazenda is a good, reasonably priced option on Rio Dulce. The owner, from the Guatemalan highlands, bought this former cattle farm over 15 years ago to build the Hacienda. Today his daughter has joined him and she is a gracious hostess speaking perfect English. The hacienda encompasses over 500 acres of land including a rubber plantation and a bird sanctuary. A favorite amongst nature-lovers, the reserve is a wonderful place to relax along the banks of the Rio Dulce. It is also a part-time home for sailors who have navigated the Carribean and docked up in the adjoining marina to take a rest. Most importantly, it is a home away from home for the adventurous traveler needing to take a break at the brink of civilization. The property is sprinkled with a range of bungalows providing a community feel within this tropical oasis. There is also a pool and a covered deck where guests can watch the big screen TV or relax in the shade. Although there used to be Internet access here, you must now make the trip across the river to Rio Dulce town (aka Fronteras) to one of the many Internet cafes.

Benefits
- Great location. Close enough to town that its not a hassle, but far enough that you feel as though you are in the tropics
- Helpful staff that will coordinate tours and travel arrangements
- On demand water shuttle to take you to and from the town of Rio Dulce (after 10pm trips must be pre-arranged, but you will be hard-pressed to find a reason to stay out past 10pm)
- This is a very good, reasonably priced option in Rio Dulce.

Drawbacks
- Facilities could stand to be upgraded.
- The pool is a little rundown and there are no lounge chairs to enjoy it.

Rooms
There is a wide range of rooms here from waterfront cabins to private bungalow that suit several budget levels. Some cabins come with private bathroom, others are shared. The cabins are fairly small and basic, but provide adequate amenities considering their location. Each has a small front porch area with chairs. Bungalows are larger, accommodating up to 7 people. Some have two floors, with a kitchen and dining room, as well as private decks with hammocks - perfect for families or long-term stays. Do not expect luxury here although they have done a good job with what they've got. Showers can be disappointing but there is hot water if you are patient. Mosquito nets are provided over each bed. Single Cabins US$16 - 25; Double Cabins US$21 - 36; Bungalows US$60; not including breakfast or taxes. 10% charge for credit cards.

Food
The restaurant at Tijax is one of the better ones in Rio Dulce and groups will often take the water taxi over to treat themselves. That being said, it is also relatively expensive and meals charged to your room can quickly add up. Service is slow, so be sure to get there early if you are leaving for a tour in the morning. Pastas are good. Don't miss the home made breads.

Children
Children are welcome here and the larger bungalows with two rooms might be just what you’re looking for.
