Description
For a little more space, this secluded island resort is a good option. A short boat ride from the town, Catamaran provides a nice quiet escape along the banks of the Rio Dulce. This sprawling piece of land was purchased and developed by American Frank Lucas in the 1970's, when the area was much different from its current state as a desirable tourist destination. Frank has established a property both for Carribean sailors passing through (or staying more permanently), but also for tourists looking for a cottage-like getaway. The shoreline of the property is spotted with bungalows built out over the water and accessed by their own personal bridgeway. In the center of it all is a large swimming pool with plenty of space to lay out and relax. Next door is a thatched roof pool bar behind which lies the large restaurant. Guests arrive at the dock/entrance which is a covered bar area with satellite TV. Frank's laptop serves as an internet terminal for those who want to stay connected.
Insider Tips
Get to know the sailors who are docked at the adjacent marina - they often have interesting stories of their travels.
Benefits
- Given that the Rio Dulce is not conducive to swimming, this large, clean pool is a nice option in the humidity of the Rio Dulce.
- Unique cabins (albeit rustic ones) over the water make for a great night's sleep.
Drawbacks
- Given the size of the location, it is an attractive option for large tour groups that can often spoil a relaxing atmosphere.
- It’s a little rundown on first glance, but given the difficulties of maintenance in areas of intense humidity, they do a good job of continually maintaining the property.
- A little pricey for what you get, but a good option nonetheless.
- This hotel is listed in several guidebooks, including the Lonely Planet, so you may want to book early.
Rooms
Rooms consist of bungalows scattered along the waterfront. They have a wonderful atmosphere giving the feeling that you are in a boathouse apartment at the cottage. The cabins are basic, with wood trim and spacious interiors. Decent, although somewhat soft, beds. Bathrooms are small but clean. The showers are not great, but they do have hot water if you let them run for a little while. Most cabins have a private balcony overlooking the water and are accessed by a small bridgeway. Rooms without air conditioning don't really need it as the breeze off the lake is sufficient. The rooms with air conditioning, however, tend to be newer. Singles US$42 - 62; Doubles US$50 - 60; Includes breakfast but not taxes.
Food
The restaurant on the premise is open from 7:00am - 9:00pm. Breakfast is included and consists of a large buffet with an omelette station, yogurt, cereal and fruits, as well as hot plates of pancakes and bacon. The lunch and dinner menu features both continental and local specialties such as Conch Chowder and Tapado.
Children
Children are welcome and there are several cabins with divided rooms including two single beds in addition to the standard double.
