About Quetzaltenango

Quetzaltenango sits on the site of the ancient Quiché Mayan capital of Xelaju, in the Guatemalan highlands at an altitude of 7800 feet. The town is often referred to by its nickname 'Xela', derived from the K'iche' word Xelaju which means 'under the ten hills'. Today Xela has become one of the most popular places for foreigners to study Spanish. Be forewarned that these classes are far more studious than the tourist-oriented classes offered elsewhere in the country. It is not uncommon to pass by a restaurant or cafe and see students hard at work with their nose in a translation book.

Despite this recent onslaught of foreigners attempting Spanish, Xela has managed to keep mass tourism to a minimum, which makes the surrounding attractions that much more appealing. The city's historical center is an equally attractive location, surrounded by Neoclassic Architecture reflecting the immense culture that has been developed here over the centuries.

Best Time to go

The weather in Xela is cool throughout the year, due to its elevation. September - February are the best months to go if you plan to spend some time hiking the volcanoes, as you will have a much higher chance of clear views from the top.
