Description
This no-frills restaurant serves up some serious Cuban dishes. It is definitely worth the 10 minute trek to the outskirts of zone 1, and provides a good excuse to escape the central square area. Despite the very simple decor it has a good vibe complimented by salsa music, colorful customers, and tasty food. The inspiration for Cubatenango came from a favorite uncle of the owner, Mario, who was forced to flee the country during the civil war. The uncle went to Mexico and then Cuba, where he learned to create the dishes that are now featured at Cubatenango. After the signing of the peace accords he returned to Guatemala, where he was reunited with his family. Upon tasting his uncle’s Cuban dishes, Mario saw a market for the cuisine in Xela, and he has filled the niche well.
The menu is heavy on beef dishes, so not a spot for vegetarians. Customers can choose from the daily special or other dishes, such as Churrasco Cubano - a flavorful cut of beef with chimichurri sauce, served with salad, yellow rice, and very tasty fried plantains. They also offer chicken dishes, and lunch items such as a Cuban sandwich or other snacks. Mains 20-40Q.
