Description
Without a doubt the nicest option for accommodation in Xela. The super-friendly owners, Dana and Jack, come from Texas, via Mexico, where they had planned to retire. They fell in love with Xela on their first trip to the area when they came to renew the paperwork for their car. They bought the building where Casa Maņen now stands in the early 90's and over the course of 6 years built their bed and breakfast - reportedly the first in the country.
In a town where comfort and customer service is hard to come by, Casa Maņen is an oasis. Accoutrements such as housecoats in the rooms, umbrellas for guest use, free-flowing drinking water, quaint decor, and an ample stock of English books in each room are provided. This grand old house centers around a courtyard with a lovely fountain that produces a soothing noise that will easily put you to sleep each night. There is a lovely roof terrace with great views of Xela and the surroundings where you can sit out and enjoy the view.
Casa Maņen supports several local organizations including a soccer team as well as La Divina Providencia, a girls orphanage that is located in Xela and benefits girls throughout the country. You can purchase sweatshirts here with Casa Maņen's logo that will go towards supporting this cause. Coffee from the highlands is also available for purchase here with the profits going towards the ladies co-op, Jun Ajpu, which hand-weaves textile bags.
Insider Tips
Ask for a room with a fireplace when it is especially cold outside. These rooms are especially charming.
Benefits
- Casa Maņen is well located just a few blocks from the central plaza.
- Dana and her husband live in an apartment on the premises and are available to provide great advice and recommendations on Xela and the surrounding areas.
Drawbacks

Some of the rooms have fireplaces as well as coffee and tea sets. The bathrooms are small and a bit dark, but very clean with electric showers producing adequate hot water. Small touches such as housecoats and drinking water set out each day add to the appeal and comfort of these rooms. Singles US$40-55; Doubles US$50-65; Not including 22% Tourist Tax.
Food
There is no official restaurant on site. Dana and Jack, however, provide guests with the option to order from an elaborate menu ranging from Beef in Red Wine and Mushroom Sauce to Salami and Cheese Hoagie. Breakfast is included in the rates and it is sure to keep you going all day, if not all week. Starting with fresh breads, fruits, and waffles or pancakes, and continuing with eggs, beans and hash browns any way you like. Breakfast is served in the small, well-lit dining area near the kitchen. For an extra charge breakfast can be served in your room.
