Flores is the gateway city to the Tikal ruins. Tourism has become so significant that Continental Airilnes has recently started a direct flight from Houston, Texas to Flores. Regular domestic flights also run from Guatemala City. It is possible to fly in, see the ruins, and fly back out again in one day. Tour companies in both Guatemala City and Antigua can arrange these excursions. Check
TACA, or
Tropic Air (to and from Belize) for flights.
Linea Dorada runs a 'first-class' bus to Flores from Guatemala City. The trip takes 8 hours and there is a bus leaving first thing in the morning or you can take the overnight bus.
Getting Around
Around Flores - Shuttles and taxis wait at the airport to take passengers into Flores. The trip costs around 15Q for a shared shuttle. Tuk-tuks will take you around the island, to Santa Elena or the airport for 10-20Q. The island of Flores itself is small enough to cover on foot.
Other destinations around Tikal - If you are willing to pay a little more for a direct ride, make arrangements with one of the many shuttle companies in Flores, or catch a taxi at the entrance of Flores. For a much more economical ride to El Remate or beyond, take a tuk-tuk to the bus terminal, and from there you can catch a collective shuttle. Rides to El Remate will cost you 10-15Q.
