Description
This is the only option of its kind on the Lake. If you want to get a feel for what its like to actually live on the lake, Terraza Choi is the place to come. Jim and Tania, who built this elegant home, are your gracious hosts. Jim, a former banker from the USA, is a self-proclaimed and evident perfectionist who continues to make sure that every little detail has been attended to on a daily basis. From the strategically placed benches that act as resting spots along the walkway from the waterfront to the well-stocked bars in the boathouse, kitchen and family rooms. Tania, formerly a professor of mechanical engineering from Honduras, has added her style throughout the property, making it a warm and welcoming place to kick back and relax. The artwork, courtesy of Jim's mother, who is a well-known artist in Naples, Florida, adds a unique flare to every room. The couple lives in an apartment below the house in order to ensure that everything runs smoothly while guests are visiting.
The house sits perched above a lovely terraced garden and has an outstanding verandah with a hammock built for two, a spacious sitting area, a colourful dining table and a charcoal BBQ built in to the wall. A stereo system has been installed for background music or more lively festivities. A DSL cable is available for guests use, as are telescopes, which can be used to view the lake activity or to peer into the windows of the International elite who inhabit the shoreline. Another deck surrounds the private dock and boathouse by the waterfront with a second charcoal BBQ and sound system. Ocean Kayaks are available for guests use as well.
Insider Tips
Although the name might suggest an Asian influence, Choi is actually a Mayan word meaning 'view of the lake'. Book early as Terraza Choi's uniqueness means that rooms go fast.
Benefits
Jim and Tania take great pleasure in hosting their guests. They like to take the opportunity to get to know them and make them feel at home. As such, the B&B is rented for private use only. If one couple, or individual rents a room, they will have the entire house to themselves. The other rooms will not be rented out and they will be charged only the price of one room.
Having both lived and worked throughout South and Central America, they are a wealth of knowledge on the area providing excellent advice to travelers.
Drawbacks
The house is located in between two towns: Panajachel and Santa Catarina Palopo. In order to get to either town it is necessary to either go by taxi (water or land) or tuk tuk.
Rooms
There are only three rooms in the house, making it a wonderful option for an intimate setting or a gathering amongst friends. A bedroom on the first floor has a single trundle bed with the option to pull out another bed underneath it. The bathroom is across the hall and is used as the main floor bathroom as well.
Two larger rooms are located on the second floor adjoined by a common bathroom. Each of these rooms has large, comfortable, queen-sized beds, one of which is on rollers and has actually been pulled out onto the spacious balcony by a guest to sleep under the stars. There is also a fireplace adding to the coziness of these rooms. All three rooms have large cable TVs in them as well as intercoms connecting them to the kitchen and the maid's quarters. US$70 -150 per night.
Food
A lovely breakfast is served each morning. The kitchen is not generally accessible to guests but you are welcome to help yourself to the bar (drinks including alcoholic beverages are available at cost).
Children
Terraza Choi prefers a no children policy.
