Description
One of the newest spots on Lake Atitlan, Isla Verde defines tranquility. It is located on a lovely part of the lake, tucked away on a quiet bay just past Santa Cruz. Owners Jonathan and Ana– longtime travelers themselves- generated many ideas in their fifteen years of traveling, which they have incorporated into the hotel. What has emerged is a low-key, bright and comfortable retreat with many original touches. Each of the cabins, which embody Isla Verde, has been integrated into the surroundings to take full advantage of the land and views of the lake. Several other ideas are still in the works, such as a beachfront palapa with hammocks and a licuado bar. The hotel now consists of eight cabins, a sauna/hot tub area, and the main house that is home to the restaurant, bar, garden lounge and a loft.
Insider Tips
Check out their services such as massages and reflexology. Internet is available and you receive half an hour of free internet a day. The nice walking trail that passes Santa Cruz and Casa del Mundo is accessible from Isla Verde.
Benefits
-Each cabin has an excellent view of the lake.
-Isla Verde operates with an aim to protect the local environment so you will note recycled materials, solar heating, and other environmentally passive building and living techniques throughout the complex.
Drawbacks
-As with many of the accommodations on the lake, the hotel is isolated so you are limited to eating dinner at Isla Verde.
-Besides the beds there are no seating options within the cabins.
Rooms
Isla Verde has eight private cabins perched on the cliff above the garden lounge. Each cabin has huge windows allowing a fabulous unobstructed view of the lake. The simple yet cozy rooms are brightly decorated and kept spotless. The double beds are extremely comfortable which, combined with the lake view, make it hard to get out of bed in the morning! Six of the rooms have attached private bathrooms that are partially open air (in keeping with the ‘au natural’ theme), so you won’t lose sight of the view while showering. The bathrooms are sparse yet adequate. The two other rooms each have private baths that are detached from the cabin. Althought the water is solar heated, there is generally plenty of hot water as long as you aren't bathing too early in the morning. Cabins with attached bathrooms are US$40, the other two cabins are US$30.
Food
Isla Verde's restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Ana’s creations use local ingredients, fresh herbs, and international influences. They are known for their excellent breakfasts, and have specials that vary daily.
Children
Children are welcome.
