About Coban

Coban is the gateway town of the Alta Verapaz state. The town itself is far from a destination, but is a good place to hang your hat while you get out and explore the rich flora and fauna of the surrounding areas. Although the city is a bit dingy, a stay in Coban lets you experience what a normal, mid-sized Guatemalan community is like. Tourism is not dominant here, due to its remoteness. Coban has, however, long been known as a center for cardamom and coffee production. The surrounding areas of Alta Verapaz are lush and green, thanks to high precipitation levels in this mountainous region. These conditions have encouraged the growth of the stunning pine, oak and cypress trees that dominate the landscape.

Best Time to go

Coban is known to be a rainy area throughout the year with ever-present rain clouds looming over the mountains. The best time to go is during the dry season (March - May) which can be quite hot. The coldest and dampest months tend to be December and January. Coban is situated at 5000 feet and can get chilly in the evenings throughout the year. The Rabin Ajau festival is held every July. It is known to be one of the most impressive indigenous festivals in Guatemala. Click here to read more about it.
