Description
Six years ago a group of women from the remote village of Santiago Zamora formed an association called "Santiaguito". Their purpose was to work together on traditional weaving and other products to distribute the benefits equally.
The women now run a cultural tour to their village, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the villagers in areas of health and education.
On the tour you will:
Tour 1: Cultural Tour
-Visit the town's lagoon and a local home
-Learn about the history, indigenous language, and traditional way of living and difficulties faced by today's rural Guatemalans
-See demonstrations of tradititional agricultural methods, weaving, and cooking
-Try Pepian, a local fare
While this tour is definitely off the beaten track, it is very well-run and all proceeds go directly to help the village. If you want a glimpse into what life is really like in a small village, this is a great option.
Tours leave every Wednesday from Proyecto Mosaic Guatemala (3A Avenida Norte #3). The tour is from 1-4 pm and costs 60Q and includes a small meal and transportation. Reservations required.
Transportation and translators may be extra. (10-20Q). Keep in mind that transportation is usually in the back of a pick-up truck!
Tour 2: Private Tour
Private tours can also be arranged.
