Description
“The restaurant” serves excellent food and each night Chef Hector lists the specials to his customers like “duck with roasted grapes on a bed of potatoes” and “Thai green curry over homemade fettuccini” (Q.68) or “roasted tomatoes with garlic and balsamic served with Egmont cheese” (Q.28) but the menu changes daily and chef Hector prides himself in serving “whatever he feels like making”. There are only four tables in “the restaurant” and they fill up quickly so it’s not uncommon to see people waiting outside for a seat. The limited space adds to the cozy but lively atmosphere and allows you to watch your meal being prepared a few feet away in the open (and hectic) kitchen. Chef Hector opened the doors to his restaurant in 2007 returning to Guatemala from studying culinary arts in Canada.
“The restaurant” is located right in front of “La Merced” church (a few steps from the arch street) in the center of Antigua.

Most restaurants first catch our attention with their name; some making reference to their culinary influences others dedicating their name to a person. Chef Hector Castro’s small bistro-style restaurant does neither, opting for a less obvious choice: remaining nameless. When asked about his decision, chef Hector jokingly blames it on lack of time. Maybe he was influenced by “the artist formerly known as prince”? |
