Description
La Peña translates literally as a place where friends come together to pass the day and enjoy life. The members of Sol Latino, a local musical group, had always dreamed of having their own la peña and they have poured their hearts into creating this space. The result of their efforts is La Peña de Sol Latino – a restaurant with fantastic food, cool performances and a great atmosphere. There is live music every night of the week with almost all of the restaurant’s staff performing at some point – from the owner to the bartender. The restaurant itself is relaxed yet stylish with many eclectic touches, such as the armadillo-shell tip jar at the bar. You can choose to dine in one of the cozy rooms, or in the open-air garden. The menu is small yet varied with prices ranging from Q20 – Q70. The Mero Macademia del Sol Latino, a white fish baked with macadamia nuts and vegetables, is their most requested dish and is divine. The internationally trained chef, Ismael Nagaz, is famous around Antigua as the chocolatier who recently started the sumptuous Chocotenango. Needless to say their chocolate desserts are phenomenal.
Insider Tips
During the week business slows down so try to stop by on a weekend when the restaurant is at its liveliest and Sol Latino is playing. They are a treat to watch. The Andean group brings together all styles of Guatemalan music while employing African-style drums, wooden flutes and guitars. The group has traveled extensively throughout the world so their music is original and progressive. They perform Wednesday through Sunday, with various other local bands filling in the other nights.
