Description
What we like most about this hotel is the good feeling that you get while staying here knowing that any profits this hotel generates go directly to support Safe Passage, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping the children of families from the Guatemala City garbage dump. Warm fuzzies aside, this hotel, which opened in May 2005, is a good deal. The hotel is well located, across from the marketplace, and only 3 blocks from the Central Plaza. Staff here speak some English and are quite pleasant. There is a narrow rooftop patio with two small bistro tables where you can sit out and enjoy the view.
Insider Tips
This is a popular choice amongst groups and North Americans.
Benefits
This hotel is a good, clean, reasonably priced option in this category and is well located to boot.
Drawbacks
The hotel faces the main street across from the market, which is a thoroughfare for commuting cars and trucks. It can be very loud at night and in the early morning.
There is a huge backyard that is currently being used as a parking lot. This would make a wonderful area to sit out and relax. It will be put to good use when Lazos Fuertes receives the proper permits to establish a restuarant that will act as a training ground for Safe Passage's children to develop skills in the hospitality industry.
Rooms
There are 15 rooms spread over four floors in this large colonial building. The rooms are small and basic, but very clean and adequate. Upon entering the room you will be greeted by two swans made from bath towels. Some rooms have double beds, others have twins. Each room has a private bathroom which, although basic and a bit tight, provides adequate comfort and amenities, including shampoo and soap.
Food
There are no restaurant facilities here, however there are plans to build a restaurant out back that will serve to feed you, but more importantly, to train high school students from the Guatemala City garbage dump to work in the hospitality industry. There are several restaurants and a grocery store within a short distance, as well as the main market if you are so daring.
Rates Single US$39, Double US$49, Triple US$59; continental breakfast, cable TV, taxes and internet use (also WiFi) included. Contact lazosfuertes@yahoo.com for reservations.
