Description
This stunning house is well located only a block and a half from the main square. Filled with character, this hotel has been in the Pellecer family for 5 generations (they still live there, in a separate area towards the back of the courtyard). The house itself has been designed in 'republican period' style, with a large central courtyard where you can sit out and enjoy a peaceful breakfast. Towards the back of the house is a smaller courtyard, which in earlier days was used to dry laundry out of the view of guests and passersby. The hotel has been deemed a museum for the amazing collection of antiques and attributes dating back to the mid-19th century. A family tree and other personal details provide testimony to the Pellecer familys strong ties to both the Guatemalan and Nicaraguan communities. Staff speak minimal English, but are extremely friendly and helpful.
Insider Tips
Let the front desk know if you will be returning late, as the staff tends to retire early.
Benefits
Unique setting in a great location
Comfortable and quiet rooms with natural acclimatization eliminating the need for air conditioning or fan.
Drawbacks
If you don't speak Spanish it may be difficult to really appreciate all the treasures the hotel offers.
If you want "new and chic", this is not your place to stay.
Rooms
Each of the 10 rooms is beautifully decorated with outstanding, unique antiques all with interesting histories. You can literally sleep like a king in one room, which houses the bed of the King of Mosquitia dating from the mid-19th century. The high ceilings and spacious rooms provide for peaceful, comfortable retreats with great beds for a good night's rest. Bathrooms are spacious and clean with decent showers. (US$48 - $97, including taxes and breakfast). Rooms do not have TVs. There is, however, a family room (think of your grandmother's) with cable TV that you are welcome to enjoy if you choose. Although the rooms do not have fans or air conditioning, the high ceilings and thick walls prevent overheating in the warm weather.
Food
Breakfast is served in the courtyard buffet-style. An assortment of fruits, juices and breads can be supplemented with eggs any style, and the traditional refried beans.
Children
Children are welcome here and there are several larger rooms to accommodate visiting families. The Pellecer family's own children can be seen enjoying the space from time to time.
