Getting There The Aeroporto Deputado Luis Eduardo Magalhães is about 30km from downtown Salvador. The best bet for flights within the country is GOL, the Brazilian discount airline. Unfortunately you must have the equivalent of a Brazilian social security number to book the flights online, so you will either have to go to a GOL outlet or call them.
Getting Around The best way to get from the airport to your destination is to prepay at one of the kiosks inside the airport. This is slightly more expensive than a metered cab but will ensure that you will arrive at your hotel safely and without detours. Don't take a ride with any of the 'independent' taxis that hang around the airport. There is also an Airport - to - Pelourinho bus that runs along the coast and makes its final stop at the Praça de Sé.
Pelourinho can be discovered easily by foot. The public elevator at the Praça de Sé will take you down to the Cidade Baixa and the Mercado Modelo.
It is easy to take the bus to any of the beaches surrounding the city. Take any bus marked 'Via Orla' and it will run along the coast allowing you to hop out at whichever beach is calling your name. To return at the end of the day take any bus marked 'Praça de Sé' for Pelourinho or 'Comercio' for the Cidade Baixa. If you are going to the bus station you'll want the bus marked 'Iguatemi'.
Ferries to Morro de São Paulo depart from the Termino Maritimo just across from the Mercado Modelo.
Cautions
Sundays are very quiet as Pelourinho and the lower town are deserted while locals hit the beach. It is wise to do the same as it can be very dangerous walking around some of these abandoned streets.
