Bahian food is unique with its heavy African influences because it is cooked in 'dendé' (palm) oil which gives off the delicious smell that will keep you coming back for more. Be careful as this is a very heavy oil and those with weak stomachs may suffer. Some of the specialties that you may want to try out include Acarajé (beans mashed into a paste and deep fried in dendé oil) or the lighter version, Abará, which is steamed in banana leaf. Both items can be served com camarão, with tiny shrimp on top. One dish that can’t be missed is Moqueca, a soupy seafood dish made with coconut milk and dendé oil and served in a clay pot. Keep in mind that Bahian food is normally served in portions for two. Ask before ordering so that you don't end up with a mountain of food.
