Salvador has some very interesting options ranging from quaint pousadas to high rise hotel chains. Some of the nicest pousadas are tucked away along Santo Antonio, walking distance from Pelourinho. The only drawback is that the roads to get there are not well lit and can be intimidating  at night. Those who prefer the beach will want to stay in Barra, or one of the beach towns further out, which will provide immediate access to the ocean.
