Shopping
Brazilians love to shop, whether it is for quality leather goods, especially shoes, purses and belts or the ever-trendy Havaiana flip flops. Local handicrafts from various regions can also make great souvenirs.
Shops are typically open from 10:00am - 7:00pm Mon - Fri and 9:00am - 1:00pm on Saturdays. Shops in Ipanema will keep longer hours on the weekends. Malls are open from 10:00am - 10:00pm Mon - Sat and on Sunday afternoons. Note that the ICMS (sales tax) is 18% in the stores.

Antiques
For antiques the best places to go are along Rua do Lavrado in the Centro. The street is lined with several stores. It is best to go here during the week in daylight hours.
Designer Clothing
Brazil is emerging on the international scene with a strong fashion identity. While designers and high end stores tend to be located in Sao Paulo, Isabela Capeto's chic, bohemian designs come straight from her Atelier in Rio. A graduate of the Fashion School in Florence, Italy, Isabela's fashions can now be found in international stores such as Barney's, Browns and Collette. (Rua Dias Ferreira, 45, Leblon. www.isabelacapeto.com.br). Oskar Metsavaht's Osklen designs were inspired on a climbing expedition in the Andes. No colourful weavings in this collection, but you will find high quality, fashionable sportswear.
Children's Clothes
Adorable outfits for children can be found at Petit Lippe on Rua Dias Ferreira.
Shoes
Havaiana flip flops are a staple in the beachgoers wardrobe. They can be found throughout Rio, including the grocery stores. For more sophisticated shoes try Constança Basto, a locally-bred designer whose shoes are now found throughout the international scene and in most US states (check out the shoe section in Anthropologie stores). In Rio you can find her shoes at her signature store on Rua Visconde de Pirajá, 371 in Ipanema or in the Rio Design Leblon center (see above). www.constancabasto.com
Farmer's Market
Every Friday a farmer's market is held in Praça de Nossa Señora de Paz in Ipanema. This is an excellent way to see what all of these sucos you've been drinking are really made of. The market also has vendors selling fish, vegetables and fresh flowers.
Bikinis
If you want to make sure you've got your Brazilian bikini before you arrive, check out Brazilian Bikinis Wholesale.
