Mr. Lam

Brazil > Rio de Janeiro > Restaurants > Mr. Lam

Description
Mr. Lam features impressive contemporary architecture and design featuring high ceilings, internal balconies and enormous windows overlooking the Lagoa along with a menu of enticing and carefully prepared dishes that attract an upper-class crowd for meals of crispy duck and handmade noodles. In addition to the a la carte menu, there is a tasting menu (R$88 per person) that allows you to sample a number of main and side dishes, and special Peking Duck (R$148). The a la carte options are divided among fish and seafood, poultry and meat and there are a few vegetarian options. The crispy duck (R$79) is a signature dish. The tofu, veggie and mushroom side dish, for R$14, is tasty and big enough to share and the gambie (R$15), inconceivably light and crispy kale with candied cashew nuts, is an unusual pleasure. In addition to the unlikely pecan pie, a number of desserts (around R$20) feature lychees.
As you might expect from a restaurant with sisters in London and New York (Mr. Chow), Mr. Lam falls into the top price and elegance categories of Rio’s eateries. Reservations are highly recommended.
Open Tuesday through Thursday 7pm-12:30am, Friday and Saturday 7pm-1:30am and Sunday from 12 noon -6pm. All major credit cards are accepted.

Insider Tips
- If you’re lucky you might catch Mr. Lam’s nephew putting on a show as he prepares meals on a special table in front of patrons.
- Be prepared if you plan to order the Peking Duck, it requires one hour of preparation time.
- Try the lychee caipirinha (R$15)!

Got a yen for Peking duck? If you’ve had your fill of churrasco and moqueca, and you’re looking for something different, Mr. Lam is the place to go. It stands out not only because it is one of the few Chinese restaurants (and one of even fewer good Chinese restaurants) in Rio, but also because of its stylishness, reminiscent of restaurants in São Paulo.
