Ipanema Inn

Brazil > Rio de Janeiro > Hotels > Ipanema Inn

Description
A longstanding favorite in this category, this hotel has recently undergone renovations and, although still very basic, it offers pleasant, clean accommodation. The staff is friendly and English speaking and the location is perfect, one block from the beach in one direction, and the main shopping street of Ipanema in the other. Small conveniences such as beach towels and umbrellas demonstrate their focus on hospitality. Souvenir shop Brasil & Cia has opened in the lobby of the hotel with a good, but expensive, selection of regional artwork.

Insider Tips
This hotel sees a mix of American and European visitors alike

Benefits
Location, location, location... It is hard to find a better price in such a good location.

Drawbacks
You get what you pay for. The rooms are basic and on the small side.

While close to the beach, none of the rooms offer an ocean view.

The air conditioning cannot be controlled by individual rooms.

This hotel is listed in the Fodor’s and Lonely Planet guides, which could make arranging reservations difficult during peak travel times.

Rooms
There are 56 rooms in total, all of which have cable TV, Internet connection, A/C, a small safe, minibar and phone. Unfortunately this most recent renovation included carpeting in most of the rooms, which now leaves them feeling a bit grungy. The beds did not undergo an upgrade with the decor and leave much to be desired as well. The bathrooms are tiny, but clean. There are two duplex units that can sleep 6 on the top floors. The 'superior' rooms have been so named because they have street views, but, given the noise, the standard is a better choice.
Rates US$90-185; includes breakfast; does not include 5% city tax.

Food
A full breakfast buffet with fruits, breads and lots of cakes is included in the rates and served in the small sitting area adjacent to the lobby.

Children
Although it will diminish the already small rooms, a pull out bed can be requested for your room to accommodate children. The duplex might be a better option for space, but at this price you are better advised to choose one of the apartment hotels.
