Description
The Hotel Debret is old, but well-maintained. The lobby has an old-world air with worn couches, carved wood and dramatic sculptures which look as though they escaped from a cathedral. The friendly, helpful, English-speaking staff give the place a homey feel. The walls are adorned with French artist Jean-Baptiste Debret’s lithographs and paintings of slavery and indigenous life in Brazil in the early part of the 19th century.
One of the best things about the Debret is its location: right across the street from Copacabana beach and walking distance from Ipanema. The accomodations are not fancy.
Insider Tips
- If you’re going to be spending any time at all in the room, spring for a Superior or Luxury room with a view.
- The nearby disco, Help, is notorious for being a hot-spot for “available women” (a.k.a. prostitutes), foreigners and cocaine.
- There is a small—no, tiny—bar across the street on Almirante Gonçalves where you can grab a beer and stand on the sidewalk listening to wonderful live samba and choro music on Tuesday and Sunday nights from around 9:00pm. The place, BipBip, is so tiny only the musicians fit around the table!
Benefits
- A hearty buffet breakfast (included) and lunch (R$15) are served on the 11th floor dining area whose wrap-around glass windows afford an awesome view of Copacabana Beach.
- There is a business center available (internet costs 20 centavos/minute) and all rooms have a wireless Internet connection.
Drawbacks
- There is no pool or gym.
- The neighborhood can be a bit unsafe, muggings have been known to take place nearby and caution should be exercised when leaving the hotel.
- The Standard rooms, with only an airshaft window, are a bit gloomy.
Rooms
The simple, uncarpeted rooms all have individually-controlled air conditioning, cable tv, a desk, a safe (for R$5) and a frigobar. The bathrooms are basic and small but pleasant. There are no bathtubs and shampoo/conditioner are not provided. Some of the 108 rooms come with hair dryer but one can be requested if your room is without. The Luxury rooms all have a front ocean view, the Superior rooms have a side ocean view (the higher floors have better views), and the Standard rooms have no views at all, though the bathrooms in the back rooms are slightly bigger.
