Arpoador Inn

Brazil > Rio de Janeiro > Hotels > Arpoador Inn

Description
The Arpoador Inn – a fairly small hotel (50 rooms) by Rio’s standards is situated on a residential street on the Ipanema side of Arpoador, the rocky point which divides the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. It is the only hotel in the area which is truly on the beach (most are across the street from the beach).

Even if you don’t go for one of the rooms with a view (breathtaking!), this simple, well-maintained hotel offers the advantage of location, location, location. The rear entrance of the hotel is right on the broad stretch of pedestrian-only beachside sidewalk with its famous black and white pedra Portuguesa paving stones. You can enjoy a meal or a drink at sidewalk café tables of the hotel’s Azul Marinho restaurant as you watch the waves, or take a walk (2mins) to the Pedra do Arpoador—the best sunset viewing in the city (mainly in the summer months).

The hotel has no gym or spa but is right on the beach so you can jog on the beach or rent a bike (the bike path goes right by the hotel’s front door) and then use the public outdoor gym by the Arpoador Rock. The Garota de Ipanema Park is also practically next door to the hotel, though it’s best not to enter the park at night unless there is an event happening.

Insider Tips
Internet, for R$10/hr, is available in the lobby

It is probably best not to cross over to Copacabana beach at night as the street is sometimes a bit empty.

Benefits
A great value for the money, given the central beachside location

The reception staff speaks English

Drawbacks
The accommodations are fairly simple and won’t entice you to spend a lot of time in your room

Standard rooms do not get much natural light

Rooms
A recent remodeling has given the Arpoador Inn a bit of character and a pleasant look with tiled floors and wonderful Brazilian paintings on the walls. The bathrooms are modern (no shampoo, but soap is provided) and the mattresses good. All rooms have a phone, desk, cable TV, a mini-bar, A/C, a safe and a closet. The luxos are spacious and bright while the superior and standard are fairly small and dark (due to interior window). Rates US$90-$185. Prices include breakfast but do not include 5% tax. Double and single beds are available for an extra charge of R$90 in standard and superior rooms and R$120 in luxo rooms for an extra bed.

Food
Breakfast is served in the Azul Marinho restaurant which is right on the beachside sidewalk. You can even take your meal—or a drink at sunset-- at the café tables outside, just a few feet from the sand.

Children
Children are welcome.
