Useful Information
Getting There
Since Morro de Sao Paulo is on the island of Tinharé you’ve only got a few options to get there. There are 3 alternatives, your choice will ultimately be determined by how much time and money you have to spend.
Catamaran
Warning: If there are even the tiniest of waves on the ocean do not, I repeat, do not take the catamaran between Salvador and Morro de São Paulo! The two-hour (R$50) ride can seem an eternity as you make use of the plastic barf bags conveniently tied to the backs of most seats. If you must take the catamaran, be sure to take a Dramamine or the like a good 30 or 40 minutes before pushing off.
Ferry, Bus, Boat
If you have more time than money you may want to catch the ferry from Salvador to Bom Despacho, Itaparica (1hr), take a two-hour bus or van ride from Bom Despacho to Valença and then a 30- or 90-minute boat trip (there are fast and slow boats) to Morro de São Paulo (approx. R$30).
Airplane
If money is more plentiful than time the solution is simple: enjoy the views on the 20-minute puddle jumper ride between the airport in Salvador and the tiny landing strip at either the 3rd or 4th beach in Morro de São Paulo (R$180).
There are two airlines that fly this route:
Addey Taxi Aereo
(55) 75 3652 1242
Aerostar Taxi Aereo
(55) 75 3652 1312
or,
Contact Marlins Ecotur for flight reservations (reservas@marlinstur.com, Tel: (55) 75 3652-1242).
Getting Around
There are no roads on the island – just sand paths. If you arrive by ferry there will be ‘porters’ equipped with wheelbarrows to transport your bags to your hotel. If you are staying in the village or the First Beach this might not be necessary but you will definitely appreciate it for stays that are further out. Some hotels will arrange pickup before you arrive, through a motorized tractor that runs to and from the distant beaches and the airport. Be sure to enquire when booking.
