Shopping
Unlike Buenos Aires, shops and restaurants in Mendoza typically observe a siesta hour - or three - where they close up between the lunch and dinner rush.
What to Buy
The good (and touristy) place to buy artisan crafts quality is the handicraft market (feria artesanal) on Plaza Independencia. The market takes place Fri – Sun. During the week you can go to the Mercado Artesenal (Avenida San Martin 1143) for handicrafts from Mendoza and beyond.
You will find a greater variety of local wines in Mendoza than you will outside the country. Keep in mind that most of the larger vineyards export all of their better wines as they can command much higher prices for them than they would in the local market. That being said, it is still possible to taste and buy some of the better wines while visiting the vineyards, and maybe even do a barrel tasting before they hit the market!
Olive oil is an up and coming industry in the region. Keep your eyes open for good quality oils as the conditions (similar to those in Italy) are ripe for olive growing.
For trendy clothing and other items try the Avenida Villanueva strip in town where you will find some good options. For larger venues try the Palmares Open Mall (Ruta Panamericana 2650; 11am – 10pm) or the Mendoza Plaza Shopping (Avenida Accesso Este 3280; 11am – 10pm). Both are located on the outskirts of town.
