Tour 1: The City
This city tour will introduce you to the highlights of the city of Mendoza. Stops include Independencia Square, which consists of four blocks with a fountain with water recreations, an amphitheater and a big Argentine coat of arms that lights up on holidays. All visitors should first get to know the Sarmiento Walkway, a pedestrian boulevard of four blocks, surrounded by open-air cafés. San Martín Avenue is the traffic and commercial backbone of the city center. A couple of blocks to the south and a block to the west takes you to the Civic Center which encompasses the Government House, Palace of Justice, Municipal Palace, Courts, a Conference Center and, across San Martín Avenue, the National Institute of Vitiviniculture.
Mendoza’s city itinerary includees the four squares which are symmetrically located two blocks away from Independencia Square, Espańa Square, Italia , San Martin and Chile square. The Independencia Theater is situated in the corner of this same block. Two more blocks ahead takes you to the Pedro del Castillo Square and the Foundation Area Museum, showing the results of excavations which, before the 1861 earthquake, were the center of the colonial city. Traces of the San Francisco Church, demolished by the earthquake, can still be seen.
You will then arrive at the huge forged iron gates –imported from Scotland for the Centenary- located in the access to the vast and beautiful General San Martín Park. This park was designed by French landscape architect Charles Thays, inaugurated in 1909 and enlarged with a zoo in 1940. The first tourist attractions are the Marly Little Horses, a replica of the ones in the Place de la Concorde in Paris. To the left, the park’s lake has in its shores the Continents’ Fountain. Further ahead, the Rosedal. The most interesting point is the Gloria Hill, crowned by the Andes Army Monument (1914), one of the most complex and powerful bronze sculptures ever made. From the Gloria Hill, you can see the Frank Romero Day Amphitheater, where the final show of the Fiesta de la Vendimia takes place. In the Zoological Garden you will see hundreds of native and exotic fauna specimens.
