Practical Info

Business Hours

Banks are open Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Business Offices are generally open from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Stores are generally open Monday – Saturday from 9.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m.

The VAT (Value Added Tax) that you pay (generally 21%) on purchases while in Argentina is reimbursable on any item purchased from a store with a duty-free sign. Keep your receipts and head to the returns desk at the airport before your departure.

Insider Tip: Smaller boutiques and locally-run shops will often give you a discount if you offer to pay cash.

Argentina is known for its high-quality, internationally renowned designers – whether it is fashion or home décor -- whose creations can be obtained at reasonable prices. Watch for names like Pablo Ramirez, Nadine Zlotogora and Fabian Zitta. Buenos Aires is a shoppers haven providing something for everyone.

If you want haute couture and recognized brands (at international prices) head to the Recoleta where you will find Louis Vuittons and Chrisitan Diors lining the streets of Avenida Alvear and Calle Quintana.

For trendier, local designers try the Palermo neighborhood. The streets surrounding Plaza Cortazar are filled with great little shops at more affordable pricing. For non-branded styles (with admittedly lower quality as well as prices), try some of the many boutiques along Avenida Santa Fe. For suggestions in trendy Palermo Viejo click here.

Calle Florida, a pedestrian-only street is filled with souvenir shops and haggling leather venders. The leather products seem to increase in quality as you get closer to Plaza San Martin. If you need a break from it all head in to Gallerias Pacificos, the shopping center at the corner of Florida and Cordoba.

If you are looking for antiques San Telmo is the place to go. Pasaje la Defensa should be your first stop. This quaint arcade is located in a charming 19th century townhouse, and filled with vendors selling everything from linens to antiques. The surrounding maze of streets are filled with tiny galleries and shops revealing great finds. See below for recommendations.

For home décor, head to Buenos Aires Design (Avenida Pueyrredon 2501), a mall in the center of Recoleta that is filled with interior design shops. Here you will find some great decorative pieces that are worth bringing home.
