Description
Pere Vilarasau is a UIAGM-certified high mountain guide and instructor with over a decade of experience guiding climbs through Latin America. When he’s not climbing some of America’s highest peaks, Pere is an agricultural engineer taking his PHD in enology and viticulture. These qualifications make him a great contact for On The Road Travelers seeking adventure at altitude.

Pere understands that a region as unique and varied as Patagonia needs to be approached from multiple perspectives. These three options are a great start with an alternative for all levels of experience:

Tour 1: Hut-to-Hut Hiking in Nahuel Huapi National Park (7 days)
Argentina has an extensive national park system with developed trails and interpretive facilities. Your hiking excursion will begin in Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi, the “Yosemite” of Argentina. The park is huge, covering more than 1.5 million acres of rugged mountains, old-growth forests and some of the most beautiful lakes in the world. The forests along the Chilean border are deciduous, and the giant towering trees such as the Coyhue rival the Douglas firs of North America in height and biomass. Wildlife of the park is unique and fascinating, such as the dog-sized deer (the pudu) and the giant woodpecker (el carpintero negro). Many of Nahuel Huapi’s species are shy and elusive, but flocks of austral parrots are not, and they will constantly remind you that you are indeed in South America. You will hike from mountain hut to hut for about 5 days. This is without a doubt one of the best ways to visit this Park.

Day 1: Arrival in Bariloche and meeting point
Day 2: Transfer to Cerro Catedral. Night in the Frey Mountain hut (4h)
Day 3: Hike to Jacob’s hut
Day 4: Trek to Laguna Negra Mountain hut

Day 6: Swing day in case of poor weather conditions; night in hotel

Tour 2: Hut-to-Hut Hiking plus Mountain Climbing Cerro Tronador - the highest peak in the region (12 days)
Cerro Tronador is a beautifully symmetrical peak on the border of Chile and Argentina. Despite it's relatively low elevation the mountain towers over the surrounding peaks by nearly 5,000 ft. Cerro Tronador offers stunning views of Nahuel Huapi National Park, relaxed hiking with horse support, moderate technical climbing and a less crowded mountain experience.

Tronador's name comes from the Spanish word for "thunder," due to the noise made by the movement of the glaciers. The mountain features huge glaciers, and problematic crevasses, on the scale of the Emmons glacier on Mt. Rainier. You should be prepared for a 4,000 ft. summit day with grade I or II ice climbing.

Tour 3: Hut-to-Hut Hiking plus Rock Climbing Seminar in Frey (10 days)
Cerro Catedral, near Bariloche, is regarded by many as the best rock climbing area in South America. Honey-coloured granite pinnacles surround a snow-filled basin. The rock is weathered, solid and breathtakingly beautiful. Sitting on a belay ledge high above the valley it is easy to see shapes and faces in the surrounding spires, as though they had been carved by some ancient civilization rather than hewn by the weather.

The climbing area is well known as "Frey", a name that comes from the "refugio Frey" (the 2 story hut where climbers stay). The homemade pizzas, pastas, and cold beer at night are part of the experience!

Once you’ve reached the Frey Hut, you can spend 3 more days there learning the basic technical skills, and work your way into traditional climbing and multi-pitch climbing.

Day 1: Arrival in Bariloche and meeting point
Day 2: Transfer to Cerro Catedral. Night in the Frey Mountain hut (4h)
