Things to Watch Out For

Safety is a common issue for locals and tourists alike. INGUAT, the Guatemalan Tourism Agency, has developed ASISTUR, providing 24 hour service through an emergency call number. Many of Guatemala's tourist locations are now connected to this service. The emergency numbers are 1500 and 2421 2810. If you carry a cell phone when you travel, don't forget to plug these numbers into your phone. Assistance will be provided for any type of emergency: accidents, physical, legal, etc. Both Spanish and English are spoken.

Its always better to be cautious around Guatemala -- always take a taxi or a tuk-tuk back to your hotel if you are out late at night and only walk down well-lit streets. Antigua especially can appear to be very safe because of all the tourists and ex-pats living there but muggings are still very common.
