About Salvador
Salvador de Bahia was Brazil's first capital, and the nation's busiest port until the 1800's. It was also the arrival point of the first slave market in the new world, with many slaves arriving from Africa to work on the sugar plantations. Today Salvador is the center of the Afro-Brazilian culture and the heart of Carnaval. The African influence is apparent in most aspects of the city: the spicy foods with their African names; the martial art / dance called Capoeira which can be seen on the streets and in some tourist locations; and the Condomblé ceremonies which arose from the suppression of African deities.
Pelourinho, the historical center of Salvador, is where much of the action is. Set up on a ridge overlooking the ocean, it is filled with history and remnants from colonial times. Although the beaches surrounding the Baia de Todos os Santos are close by, there are nicer beaches to be found along the coast and a trip further out from Salvador in either direction will be worth your while.
Best Time to go
The months leading up to Carnaval will be the most culturally active in Salvador as people prepare for the event. During Carnaval and the weeks leading up to it, accommodations become scarce and prices skyrocket. Be sure to book in advance. The months from April though June see the most rain and are also the downtime when some of Salvador's pousadas close for much needed repair after the events of Carnaval. This is also when prices are at their best. However, if you want guaranteed sunshine, the summer months of October - March are your best bet.
